Horizon Three Industries takes great pride and is very grateful to have worked with the Torino Olympic Organizing Committee to create one of the most important historic symbols of the Olympic tradition, the Olympic Flame for the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, Italy. Since 1928, the flame has marked the opening and closing the games in dramatic fashion. The 2006 opening ceremony displayed the very essence of host Italy and culminated in the explosive eruption of the flame high above the Olympic Stadium.
The specially designed tower stands 57 meters, or 187 feet, high. It is the tallest flame ever lit for the Olympic Games. The flames blasted from the tips of six tower legs, five of which twist around the center leg. The flames were designed to reach a height of 20 meters, or 65 feet, but were actually operated at approximately 6 meters, or 20 feet, to reach a proportion that met the natural beauty of the stadium and beautifully executed opening ceremony show. The flame system ran continuously for the full duration of the XX Olympic Winter Games utilizing a totally fault-tolerant and double-redundant operating and control system. Horizon Three Industries provided design and engineering, fabrication, installation, testing and operations of the flame system, including on-site engineers around the clock for the entire duration of the games. |
